The Greater Sydney Bike Trail

There has been a bit of press about the Greater Sydney BikeTrail lately including this post from Bicycle NSW. The trail is over 200km in its classic sightseeing route and can be trimmed to 150km and you can still catch most of the highlights.

To whet your appetitie, check out the slideshow of 220 km trail or you can read about the trail and see maps here >>

You can see more videos of the trail here including the lockdown relay

Note: A path from Cronulla to Sutherland is now on the Sydney Map. Quite a climb, a few 100m of footpaths but pretty decent really.

Here is a link to the path on our Google Maps page >>

Hi Garry I may have missed it somewhere but do you have some idea of what proportion of this ride is on actual bike paths?

I haven’t written it up. But the eastern suburbs is mostly back roads then its mostly bike paths all the way round to the north shore. I intend to write it up. But the pictures in the video qive an indication of the type of path. This is two years of research in the making as no one has done it. Maybe 90% and you can skip the two bad bits by train if you want to anyway.

There should also be a Great Northern Mountain Bike trail from Sydney to Newcastle (260km) The problem in Sydney is always lack of political will re cycling and that NSW National Parks still don’t ‘get’ off-road cycling. The Great Northern Ride would be an incredible asset to our city and provide a massive boost to many local regional economies- especially with a ‘hop on hop off’’ aspect for locals and tourists due to its proximity to the railway line.

  3. […] in 2017 I suddenly took the urge to ride around Sydney.  I posted the story and the video and no one really got inspired to go around.  Well those days are behind us.  17 people have gone […]
