Best New Sydney Cycle Infrastructure Awards -2018

Here are the best 3 bicycle infrastructure improvements in 2018 across the whole of Sydney. To win, there must be an increase in the numbers of people using the path, the path has to pretty safe, good looking and fun to ride.  It doesn’t have to be long if it connects existing trails better.

1st Place – Woolooware Coastal Track

This used to be 2 km of riding through warehouses on the road that went from Tarren Point to Woolooware. We always turned around at Tarren Point and headed back to Ramsgate.  Not now, we always ride through Woolooware and then go to Shark Park before turning around.  We now often go onto to Cronulla. There are lots of families now using this resource. Fantastic work Sutherland Council  See on map >>

2nd Place – Yandhai Nepean Crossing at Emu Plains

So many people come to this area along the Nepean River to walk and cycle. Unfortunately getting across the old Victoria Bridge was a nightmare. This was a great deterrent for everyone as there  are a couple of decent walkways on the M4 bridge further to the south.

Well that has all been fixed as there is now a fantastic bridge across the water and a great loop for all.  Enjoy the 8km loop and lots more in a good area for recreational riding.   See on map >>

Yandhai Nepean Crossing whilst it was being built

And here is the bridge is at the end of 2018.  We saw lots of people using it, what a great bridge  ….

Third Place – Powells Creek Refurbishment

A new cycle path were added to Powells Creek. It was pretty ordinary cycling through that area before.  This deserves a mention here because of the fantastic improvement to the environment.  These old canals around Sydney are generally an eye sore and a nose sore too.  Powells Creek is an example to all the other concrete canals that they can be great places for wildlife and even humans. Powells Creek didn’t win because the vital connection through to the Cooks River Cycle path is still a dogs breakfast.     See on map >>

Shonkies Prize.

This was an easy win. The ramp to the Sydney Harbour bridge was put on the back burners again despite some very positive messages before a last minute change of mind. 2000 people clamber up those stairs every day, mostly people with cleats. Fix it..

Here are the descriptions of the top two

The Botany Bay Area – south of the airport

Emu Plains to Sydney Regatta Centre – Two Loops

Great to see some excellent improvements. Agree with the shonky prize. Pushing a bike up stairs, even with a ramp, is the pits.
